We are fortunate to receive hundreds of CVs weekly. You may only have as little as 10 seconds to make an impression. This means that your CV needs to show enthusiasm and clarity in trying to achieve the position you’re applying for.
Here are our top 5 things to avoid putting on a CV:
1. Providing irrelevant personal information
You may be proud of the fact that you are a marathon runner, recently sky dived or enjoy fine dining in London’s top restaurants, but unless your personal information is relevant to the job you’re applying for, do not include it on your CV.
2. Spelling errors, typos and poor grammar
It’s not rocket science. You’ve got spell check so use it! American spellings are not correct in the UK.
3. Misleading information
You want your CV to outshine the competition, but avoid the temptation to go too far. We conduct rigorous background checks on all our candidates, it’s our job to do so.
4. An overindulgent CV
Keep your CV short, punchy and to the point. This means it should not be more than 2 pages of A4, unless you have extensive contract and freelance experience.
5. Academic failure
Some companies insist on a solid history of achievement. But many others go straight to your work history. You don’t need to broadcast a failed module or particular grades.
