January is a month of change and for many candidates, 2022 will be the year that they land their dream marketing role. With many companies now resuming hiring, there are plenty of exciting opportunities for talented Marketers, so if your new year’s resolution involves you moving up in your career, as a lleader in marketing recruitment, we are here to support you.
- Decide if you are ready for a new position.
We all know how easy it is to get wrapped up in new year’s resolutions, and whilst some people are certainly ready for change, just know that there is no pressure if you are not yet ready. Whilst business is booming and talented Marketers are in high demand, it is important to think about whether you are deciding on a change. Determine whether you have outgrown your current position, whether you are still finding it challenging enough and whether you are still excited about what you are doing. Assess your market worth and check if you are being paid correctly or at the level, you are happy with. Answering these questions will help you decide whether or not you should be looking for a new role at the beginning of 2022.
- Set your career goals
If you have decided that you want a new role, finalise a list of what it is exactly that you are looking for and what you want to gain from your next position. Think beyond salary and job title and consider what you are truly passionate about and which skills you wish to highlight and develop. Before sending off your applications, determine what your dream marketing role looks like and filter out the positions that are not right for you. At the same time, be open to learning more about roles during the process, no one has a crystal ball and can be certain it’s perfect from the word go.
- Identify the gaps in your experience and boost your CV
Talented Marketers are in high demand but if you want to stand out and get your CV noticed, identify gaps in your experience and think of the ways in which you can improve your CV. We recommend that you start by reading job ads on LinkedIn and deciding whether you have the relevant experience and skills; from this, you can work out what employable skills you need to highlight and what skills you need to develop. A great way to boost your CV is through gaining extra certificates or qualifications; Google Analytics, HubSpot Academy, and SEMrush Academy offer popular free online courses that you can take to support your job applications and stand out to employers. Although you worked there, don’t assume someone reading your CV knows what previous employers did. Provide clarity and ease of reading so your CV is properly assessed.
- Build your network
LinkedIn is a great place to network but before you can start connecting with others, ensure that your profile is professional, up-to-date, and fully optimised. Having a glowing LinkedIn profile will separate you from the competition and this online presence will make it easier for employers to find out more about you. Whilst it is not always about who you know, many candidates often find roles advertised by mutual connections and with over 740 million people using LinkedIn, it is key that you get on board and start connecting! Consider the keywords in your profile, build out the content in all areas and get connected. Agencies searching for candidates will turn to keywords, so no keywords mean we may not always find you.
