2022 was a year of change and evolution for the whole world, and marketing continues to evolve alongside. The way that we work is virtually unrecognisable from a few years ago and employers have been forced to adapt or face losing valuable marketing talent. Spotlight Recruitment supports clients in all sectors looking to recruit the best talent in marketing, digital and communications, and here are some key points to consider when you’re looking to retain marketing talent in 2023 and beyond.
Flexible working
The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 meant that many of us became remote workers overnight. It was a real shock to the system at the time, but many people achieved a better work/life balance by eliminating the daily commute. As offices reopened, hybrid working became another option that worked well depending on individual circumstances.
The key element that employees want is choice. They want to choose the working arrangements that best suit their lifestyle, rather than just doing what they’re told. They may appreciate going to an office every day and the structure that brings. Conversely, they may favour the flexibility of working from home, particularly if this helps them fulfil family obligations. Talking to your employees about the best working configuration for them will help them to feel valued and listen to what the majority wants.
Make the office a positive space
If you do need to have employees in a fixed space, ensure that your office is fit for purpose. If your office stood still for a year or two, it might be in need of a spruce-up. Begin with good quality basics: ergonomically designed desks and chairs, inviting and inspiring facilities and an attractive location. Then it’s time to start looking at the extras: spaces to relax or eat lunch, free parking, access to resources, an attractive benefits package and a great coffee machine!
No more pizza parties and table football
We’re not saying that these things aren’t great. But employees are no longer that dazzled by fun ‘work perks’. Instead, they’re more likely to gravitate towards things that make lives easier and balance the cost of living, such as improved holiday entitlement, enhanced sick day provisions and access to leave when children are unwell. But free food is still appreciated!
Opportunities for progression
Employees with stagnant career progression will be inclined to look for new opportunities where their skills are recognised. By giving individuals clear goals to work towards, and then following them up with rewards such as promotions, pay rises and team expansion, you’ll help them to remain engaged with the company. Check-in regularly to find out how they’re progressing and to look at ways of expanding on their plans.
Prioritise mental health
Mental health used to be a taboo subject in the work environment but not anymore. In order to retain marketing talent, agencies are recognising the importance of fostering good mental health in their organisation. This includes an open and tolerant environment in which to discuss any concerns, access to mental health services if needed and subscriptions to wellness apps like Calm and Headspace.
