Finishing university and landing your first role in marketing can often feel like a challenging and slightly daunting process. Knowing where to start, where to find the roles, and what skills you need are hard enough on their own and the current climate has not made things easier! The job-seeking process can be enjoyable and having placed numerous graduates in exciting marketing, communications and digital roles, Spotlight Recruitment know exactly how to help! So, if you’re a candidate looking to land your first role in marketing, you should follow our 4 tips below.
- Network on LinkedIn
LinkedIn is a great place to network but before you can start connecting with others, you need to ensure that your profile is professional, up-to-date, and fully optimised. Having a good LinkedIn profile will separate you from the competition and this online presence will make it easier for employers to find out a little bit more about you. Whilst it is not always about who you know, many graduates often find roles advertised by mutual connections and with over 740 million people using LinkedIn, it is key that you get on board and start connecting! Consider the keywords in your profile, build out the content in all areas and get connecting.
- Sign up to recruitment sites
Whilst LinkedIn is a great starting point, make sure not limit yourself to searching on one platform alone. A great way of finding out about new roles is by registering with Recruiters and you can send your CV to Spotlight Recruitment by emailing info@spotlightrecruitment.com. You can also apply for our roles directly on LinkedIn and ask for advice at any time. We love supporting our candidates career journeys and are happy to help in any way we can.
- Upskill yourself with free online courses
Whilst your degree alone is incredibly impressive, having a few extra certificates or qualifications certainly won’t hurt. Google Analytics, HubSpot Academy, and SEMrush Academy offer popular free online courses that you can take to boost your CV and support your job applications. Continued studying looks impressive to employers and shows commitment and willingness to learn new skills.
- Create a stand-out CV
Your CV will most likely be the content an employer sees first, so make sure it is formal, well-written, informative but not too long. Make sure that all information included is relevant, up-to-date, and matches your LinkedIn profile. If you’re a recent graduate, it’s unlikely that you’ll have a ton of experience, so use your university course and extra-curricular activities to demonstrate your employable skills. Build out a personal profile to be clear on the area you are looking to work within.
The graduate job hunt will not always be plain sailing, but by following these 4 tips, you are on the right road to securing the marketing graduate role that you really want. If you are a graduate considering a role in marketing, digital, or communications, do get in touch to find out more about the roles we have advertised and how Spotlight Recruitment can help.
